There are several things to consider when buying a futon chair bed. Here is my quick guide:

Material
Traditionally futons were made of wood. These are still some of the most popular frames around. If you are looking for a more modern look you may be interested in the metal frames. These can be very stylish and are similar in price to the wooden frames. The only frames which I would suggest avoiding are those which are upholstered. The reason for this is that one of the great things about a futon is it versatility, you can change the covers and colors to suit changes in your room, however, if you have an upholstered futon – this becomes harder.

Mattress
I would certainly get the best quality mattress you can afford. However, if you have a limited budget don’t worry. Since the mattress on a futon chair bed is completely separate to the frame you can always get a cheap mattress to start with and upgrade it when you have a little extra money. The best mattresses in my opinion are the 100% organic mattresses – but the range is huge and I am sure that you will quickly be able to find one which fits your budget and taste.

Covers
This market has gone a bit nutty; you can get just about any fabric in just about any color. There are two which I particularly like. The first are the very thick 100% cotton ones. These tend to come in very deep rich colors which I love. However, I have also recently become a bit of a convert to the faux suede ones. They are made from synthetic materials – but they are so soft! Also, since they are slightly stretchy you are pretty much guaranteed a perfect fit every time. The only covers I would be a little wary of buying are the thin cotton ones. The problem with these is that they do not hold their shape as well and they get wrinkles – which really irritates me. I think if you are going for cotton then you should definitely buy the thickest cover you can find – you want it to be a bit of a cross between canvas and traditional upholstery material.

All in, I think that getting your perfect futon is about being practical and realising that you can buy the bits separately; the frame, the mattress and the covers. Futon chair beds are fun and funky items of furniture, so just go and choose what you like – you can always change bits of it later!

The futon chair bed is a great way to create extra sleeping space. The market is full of different types of sleeper sofas and extra sleeping ideas – but I believe that the futon chair bed is by far the best solution. Let me explain why:

Style
When futons first became popular outside of their native Japan, they were pretty limited. In fact, sleeping on a futon was pretty similar to sleeping on a blanket on top of some packing cases – thankfully these days are over. There are now many different styles of futon chairs available; something to fit every room and every style of décor. They are also now made to be opened and closed regularly, hence they have nice smooth mechanisms which do not leave you with either a slipped disc or a squashed fingers. Basically, whatever the style of your room you will now be able to find a futon chair bed frame which will fit in well.

Comfort
The mattress on futons used to be simply a case of the more money you spent the thicker the mattress. The theory was that the thicker the mattress, the more comfortable it was. In reality this was not actually the case. The truth was that the thicker the mattress the longer it too to compact and get unbearably comfortable. Now you can get organic mattresses with natural rubber in them to ensure that they hold their shape. In fact, it is probably harder to find those old really uncomfortable mattresses than it is to find a modern comfortable version.

Works as a Bed and a Chair
The problem with many sleeper sofa solutions are that you have to compromise on either the chair comfort or the bed comfort (and in some cases you seem to compromise on just about everything!). However, with the futon chair bed it works as a chair and a bed. This is because the frames are simple and sturdy. Also since the frames are not generally upholstered it means that there is practically no wear and tear to the frame, so over time this does not affect its comfort. Equally, the mattresses are more independent; so should you decide to upgrade you mattress – you can. You simply have to log onto Amazon.com – choose another and in 2 days you will have a new mattress. Much easier than trying to sort out any other sort of sleeper sofa or chair bed!

Accessories
One can’t really get by without commenting on the great futon chair bed covers which are now available at very reasonable prices. This is a great way to keep your futon looking fresh and fitting with any changes of decoration you may apply to the rest of the room.

All in – I think you would be hard pressed to find a more practical and versatile guest sleeping arrangement than a futon chair bed.
